Alyson Moore is a visual artist and art educator based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
I make art to build connections between my own experiences and the experiences of others. I believe that art has the ability to expose the subtleties and nuances of experience that cannot always be explained in words but that are felt through our senses and emotions. Specifically, I am interested in engaging with the experiences that come from being female in a contemporary Canadian context and investigate connections between and among collective experience and personal experience as a way of finding belonging and my place in the world. By creating art, I attempt to provide opportunities for audiences to connect with the themes and feelings that I try to embed in my art as a way of furthering the web of connections and relatability of experiences. I aim to do this by gently prompting emotional or sensory reactions (“gut feelings,” ) that suggest responses to nostalgia, longing, acceptance, or hope.
My older work explores connections between people and their environments and focused mainly on making tactile and textural experiences visual through mark-making. These works were more about self-expression and interpretation whereas my current works are more about building connections between people. I use art made by other people, particularly females in contemporary contexts, as inspiration and prompts for response in my own work. The art I consume comes from a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing, poetry, prose, and photography. I am also interested in responding to art forms that I am less well-versed in, including dance, drama, and film. My personal artistic style is often influenced by photography and illustration artists, as figures and portraits are featured heavily in my work. I use metaphor and hybridity as tools for situating my figures in environments that are both real and surreal, and am mostly working in drawing and painting mediums, although I am also exploring block printing and textile art in my current art explorations.
